Fleshing Out Ideas – Building Worlds and Characters That Feel Real

Flat characters and thin worlds are what make stories feel forgettable. Readers connect when they can feel the weight of a character’s choices and believe the world has rules and history.

The “Why”

This is where Grok becomes incredibly useful. It can help you explore the “why” behind everything.

A Quick Story

Elena had a cool concept: a world where emotions are currency. She asked Grok to interview her main character like a nosy but kind journalist. The character revealed she was terrified of running out of “joy credits” because her little brother had a rare condition. Suddenly the whole story had emotional stakes she hadn’t consciously planned.

How to Develop Characters and Worlds

Example Prompt “Interview my character [name] from the perspective of a curious but kind journalist. Ask them about their biggest fear and why they’ve never told anyone.”
Example Prompt “Help me understand what my character really wants deep down, even if they won’t admit it out loud.”

Exercise

Pick one character you’re working with. Ask Grok to have a conversation with them about something they’ve never told anyone.

Lighthearted Encouragement

Worlds and characters don’t need to be perfect on the first try. They just need to feel alive.
